Pittsburgh Technology Licensing Corp and WeatherWise Release Groundbreaking Technology
New Consumer Modeling Technology Available for License
Pittsburgh, PA, USA (September 3, 2008) - Pittsburgh Technology Licensing Corp (PTLC)
announces the completion of a new consumer energy modeling method, Unified Modeling 2 (UM2) to its technology line.
UM2, like PTLC’s SureCalc® models, are used to determine customer energy consumption with respect to weather.
The increased accuracy of the UM2 provides a more complete understanding of consumer behavior and price elasticity
which is useful in facilitating energy purchasing and lowering costs to consumers.
The development of UM2 is the result of several years and significant investment in research
and development by WeatherWise and PTLC. WeatherWise has already transitioned to UM2 for use in its EnerCheck®
calculations, and will transition its fixed bill programs to UM2 beginning in January of 2009. SureCalc®, the
previous technology, has been licensed by WeatherWise and has been the foundation of its calculations since 2003.
According to Andy Meyer, Vice President of Operations at WeatherWise, "UM2 runs incredibly
fast, fast enough to be built into spreadsheets. Furthermore, it has a single consistent modeling structure that
runs both heating and cooling related calculations. The greatest feature is that the model’s methodology provides
more accurate separation of modeling variables yielding higher predictability in our calculations."
Like SureCalc®, UM2 uses sophisticated heuristic algorithms to model the energy
consumption of commercial and residential customers. UM2 accuracy surpasses the most advanced modeling methods
currently available to energy companies from academic and research institutions. This accuracy is especially
important in the reduction of risks and costs and increased clarity in observation of consumer behavior changes.
SureCalc® Technology is Still Licensed to Energy Companies and Supported by WeatherWise
Since UM2 is available on many, but not all platforms, PTLC will continue to offer energy company licensing for both
SureCalc® and UM2 technologies. WeatherWise will also continue to support users of both technologies in training
and issue resolution as well as implementation of the UM2 technology on new platforms.
